Your Health and Your Health Cover: How to Check Both
One serious illness can cost a family more than years of savings. Two things protect you from that: your health, and your health cover.
This guide shows how to check both with Map My Risk: the habits the Health & Wellness Check looks at, and how much health cover a family needs, with one worked example.
Watch the one-minute guide with MIRA.
1. Start With the Health & Wellness Check
The check asks about your height and weight, blood pressure and sugar, tobacco, exercise, existing conditions, family history, how often you have check-ups, and your stress, sleep and social connection. You get a health risk level of Low, Moderate or High, with suggestions from MIRA.
2. Six Habits the Check Rewards
Each of these lowers your risk level in the check. Miss one and it goes up.
🩺A check-up every yearGet a full-body health check-up once a year.🚶Move 4+ hours a weekWalking counts. Below this, the check adds risk.🚭No tobaccoTobacco in the last year adds risk on its own.⚖️A healthy weightBMI 18.5 to 25. Eat a balanced diet and limit processed foods.❤️Know your numbersBlood pressure 120 or under, fasting sugar under 100.😴Sleep and stressAim for at least 7–8 hours of sleep every night. Reduce stress through walking, meditation or hobbies.💡 These are general habits, not a treatment plan. See a doctor for advice on your own health.3. Then Check Your Cover: Meet Poonam
Poonam's family relies on the group health cover she gets through work. They have nothing of their own.
| Health cover today (through work) | ₹3 lakh |
| Base family floater to aim for | ₹10 lakh |
| Base cover still to add | ₹7 lakh |
| Total cover, with a super top-up | ₹1 crore |
4. Two Steps to Enough Cover
Step 1₹10 lakhA family floater of their own as the baseStep 2₹1 croreIn total, with a super top-upBase first. A super top-up cannot stand in for the base, because it only pays once your claims cross its threshold.
Then the super top-up. It pays once the year's total medical bills cross a threshold, usually set at the size of your base policy. Because it only pays above that threshold, it costs much less than a base policy of the same size.
5. Why a Policy of Your Own
🏢Work cover can endIt usually ends when you leave or change jobs, and the employer can change it at renewal.⏳Waiting periodsNew policies usually have a waiting period for existing illnesses, which is easier to get through while you are healthy.🔁 Review your cover each year, because medical costs rise faster than most prices. A larger family, older parents on the policy or treatment in a big city can all justify more than this benchmark.🔍 Check Your Health and Your Cover with Map My Risk
